La Torre de la Vela capturada desde la Plaza de San José. Construida por el fundador de la dinastía nazarí, Muhammad ben Nasr (1238-1273) como torre de residencia al modo feudal, por eso también se la conoce como la Torre de la Vigilancia. En la su altura es menor debido a un rayo que destruyo la espadaña de la campana ,y de una explosión del polvorín que había en el Darro y que voló parte de las almenas.
Tiene cuatro plantas más la terraza: una mazmorra subterránea con silo y tres pisos. Es la torre de mayor envergadura, y la más occidental de la Alcazaba por lo que sirve además como atalaya del Albaicin, de la medina y de toda la Vega granadina. En tiempo cristiano servia para avisar a los vecinos de algún acontecimiento, Por eso lo del nombre de la vela. (de ciceronegranada.)
